Watkins Community Center
Our Story
The Watkins Community Center Building began as the Watkins Elementary School, named for Professor J. B. Watkins, who was once head of one of three schools formed in the town of Honea Path. Watkins School first served as an elementary school for grades 1-6, then became a school for grades K-4, then K-2. After the opening of the Honea Path Elementary School (formerly Gantt Elementary School) in 2002, the Watkins School Building was deeded to the town of Honea Path by Anderson County School District 2. The decision was made by the Town to use part of the building for Town Hall and the remaining part as a multipurpose facility for service agencies, a museum, educational institutions/organizations, and community groups.

A committee of citizens was formed to make plans for the multipurpose section of the building and became the Watkins Community Center (WCC) Board of Directors. The Board continues to meet monthly to oversee the use of the Community Center and the maintenance of that section of the building, operating as a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt charitable organization. WCC sustains itself through proceeds from use of the space, fundraising events and donations. WCC has also received hospitality tax revenue funds from the Town.

Fulfilling its purpose to operate exclusively for charitable purposes, the Watkins Community Center continues to provide services designed to enhance the quality of life for the Honea Path Community.

WCC provides three classrooms and a reception room for community use. These areas may be used for activities such as class reunions, wedding receptions, birthday parties, family gatherings, and community programs. The reception room area includes a catering kitchen, tables and chairs, a stage with lighting and microphone service, and can seat up to 250 guests.

There is also space for the Honea Path Food Pantry, a Clothes Closet, and an Exercise Room located in the basement area at the rear of the building.
Tri-County Technical College leases four classrooms referred to as the Billy O’Dell Learning Center.

The Watkins Community Center is located at 204 S. Main Street, Honea Path, SC 29654.
